Music in Venues Fund 2022

Presented by Auckland City of Music and supported by Auckland Council and the Local Activation Fund Programme, administered by Auckland Unlimited on behalf of the New Zealand Government.

What is it?

Music in Venues is a contestable fund of 23 x $5000 grants for the provision of music events in and around the region’s grassroots music venues. This is in recognition of the vital role of venues in music eco-system and the pressure that they have been under due to extended restrictions. It seeks to kickstart the welcoming back of audiences and contribute to boosting audience attendance.

What type of events will you fund?

Any music-based event or series of events.

Where do the events need to take place?

The fund is designed to support the region’s small-medium sized, dedicated music venues as much as performers. The venues are expected to meet at least three of the following eligibility criteria:

  • It has track record of hosting original, live New Zealand music & performers;
  • It has an organisational focus on original, live New Zealand music, with other ancillary services (alcohol, food, merchandise) subsidiary to or dependent upon music activity;
  • It possess the amenities and infrastructure of a music venue;
  • It occupies an important role within their local community as a hub for live New Zealand music & performers.

Eligibility of other venues who can’t meet three of the above will be considered on a case by case basis if they reach targeted, underserved communities. If mainly DJs perform in the venue, events must be performed by "artistic DJs", i.e., DJs who produce music and / or operate labels.

When do the events need to take place?

All events need to occur in the 2022 calendar year.

How are applications assessed?

A panel consisting of regional and music sector representatives will be responsible for assessing all applications. The representatives will come from: Auckland City of Music, Auckland Council, NZ Music Commission, Recorded Music NZ and APRA AMCOS NZ.

 Assessment prioritisation criteria includes:

  • The audience for the event is clear and understood.
  • The venue supports high quality outcomes and the location is accessible.
  • The event has Māori values, Kaupapa Māori or Mātauranga Māori considerations. This will include events that have strong Māori storylines and themes, that educate or allow the participants to experience Māori traditions and world views.
  • The event has a significant level of participation and support by Māori even though the nature and type of genre may not necessarily be Māori in nature.
  • The grant is for a new event, not ongoing operational activity.
  • The event will promote quality and excellence in music.
  • The event will raise the profile of music and/or venues in the Tāmaki Makaurau region.
  • The event will increase opportunities for diversity, social inclusion and equity.
  • The event will take place within the boundaries of the Auckland Region.
  • The event takes place in calendar year 2022.
  • The venue has a current OneMusic licence.

When do applications open?

Applications for the first tranche of 10 grants will open on Monday 16 May 2022 9:00am. Closing date is Friday 27 May 5:00pm.

Applications for the second tranche will open on Monday 6 June 2022 9:00am. Closing date is Friday 17 June 5:00pm

Can I apply for more than one grant for the same performer?

All applications will be judged on merit, however, given the limited amount of grants available, it is unlikely that a single performer would receive more than one grant.

I’m a manager/promoter. Can I apply on behalf of multiple performers?

Yes. However, please note that each application should be for distinct and separate events.

Can separate applications be made for multiple events occurring on the same day or in the same area (e.g. a festival or street party)?

Yes, provided that each event is occurring at separate venues.

What can the grants be used for?

Grants are provided for any associated costs with staging an events. These may include (but not limited to): promotion, backline hire, transport, event personnel, marketing, merchandise and performer fees. It is also a condition of the grant that venue hire fees are mandatory and must clearly be itemised in your budget. Venue hire fees must be a minimum of $500.00.

Please note that grants cannot be used for the purchase of alcohol.

What happens if my application is successful?

We will notify you by email and you will be asked to supply an invoice to upload the grant in full. All grant recipients will also be required to sign an agreement that commits to reporting on the event after it has taken place, as well as other terms and conditions. Who is funding the grants?

Auckland City of Music (ACOM) in association with Auckland Council and Activate Tāmaki Makaurau’ fund via Auckland Unlimited.
